Housebreaking Your Puppy: Most Important Success Factor

You've finally broken down and visited the animal shelter. That small golden retriever puppy was just perfect for your young daughter to learn the responsibility of having a pet. Of course, the puppy will have to be trained, and perhaps the most important success factor in whether or not you keep the dog is getting it housebroken as quickly as possible. Below are some tips to help you and your daughter in achieving your goal that much faster.

Tip - 1: Have Enough Time

One success factor in training your new puppy is time. Either you or your child will have to spend a great deal of time with the puppy to help it to understand that he or she cannot go to the bathroom inside the house. Just like a child when they are one or two years old, the dog simply doesn't know how to hold their bowel movements or urinations until they get the opportunity to go outside. So basically in the beginning a person must keep an eye on them and transport them outside when they are beginning to have an accident. Some people even confine the puppy to an area such as the kitchen and allow them to relieve themselves on paper. Once they learn to go on the paper, it's a fairly easy trick to transport the paper outside and convince them to follow.

Tip - 2: Be Consistent

Another success factor in housebreaking your pet is consistency. Puppies respond best to a consistent routine. Feeding times should be the same time each day, as well as bed times and play times. That way, when you take your puppy outside for a walk after eating, the puppy will associate the urge to go to relieve him with the outside world.

Tip - 3: Praise Often for Good Deeds.

One success factor that is often overlooked in the frustration of puppy training is the idea of praise. A puppy is like anyone else; it is much easier to get results with positive re-enforcement than with negative re-enforcement. Therefore, when your puppy does relieve himself outside, praise him or her accordingly. Soon they'll learn to associate the two things as being part of the same success factor.

Of course, the most important success factor ties together all three of the lesser ones presented above. And that is patience. Housebreaking your new pet will not happen overnight, but with a little bit of love and a lot of patience, it will happen. Just keep your head up and keep at it. Eventually both your puppy and you will succeed at this most important success factor.
