Ways to Help Employees Beat Stress
Research confirms that if your employees are stressed out, that can cost you dearly in lost workdays due to absenteeism and higher incidences of on-the-job injuries both in the short term and in the long run. In addition, your business will, most probably, experience lower productivity and poor quality output on account of stressed out employees.
It is clear that you need to engage in some cost effective measures to minimize stress on the job and provide opportunities for your employees to reduce other stress related issues.
Obviously, you want your business to be run by motivated, dedicated, highly energized employees. Investing in improving their work environment and helping them reduce stress on the job may be the answer.
Given below are a few tips on ways to help reduce employee stress and help them increase output.
- Address the need to provide an attractive and comfortable work environment in order to reduce stress. Appropriate colors and surroundings have an impact on a person's attitude. Create a comfortable, less formal atmosphere and introduce plants etc.
- Organize a quiet space, a room where employees can take a break if they so wish. This should be separate from the normal frenetic activity of the work place itself. This can be a space the employees can go to, to take a quick break from the normal stresses of their job.
- Allow the employees to experience a sense of personal power. Don't keep telling them what to do all the time. Allow them to make their own decisions and to make commitments that are work related. This empowers them and reduces their stress as they don't have a sense of having been 'brow-beaten by the boss'.
- Make it a point to acknowledge good performances by your employees.
- Ensure you provide ergonomically efficient tools, equipment and furniture in the work place.
- Create opportunities for your employees to build stronger working relationships through extra curricular activities. Meetings, socializing, outings and cultural activities are good examples. Organizing sporting and team events, and encouraging them to participate in community service activities increase their sense of making a difference and reduce stress too.
