Setting and Achieving Goals

"Reach for the stars" they tell you. "Dream big dreams", "anything is possible", "anyone can become a millionaire"!

Is it true?

Absolutely! You can be anything, do anything, and have anything you set your heart and mind upon. You truly can become wildly successful.

So now, you are raring to go, you have so many things you want to achieve and you just can't wait to get started. And, just like you had to learn to crawl before you could walk, and walk before you could run, you need to know that the same holds true for setting and achieving your goals.

A few points to keep in mind when starting:

  • Begin by setting goals that are attainable: Why? So you can complete them, grow in confidence at your ability, and learn the mechanics of how you set your goal and achieved it. Initially, keep your goals reasonable and as you complete one goal, set the next so you can have a string of successes that are proof to you, of your ability to achieve your goal.
  • Work your way up the challenge ladder: You've proved to yourself that you can set small goals and achieve them. So, now you can start setting larger and more challenging goals. But remember the crawl -> walk -> run principle. A high jumper, who wants to excel in his field, doesn't right away set the bar at 10 feet. He gradually increases the level, as he successfully masters the lesser heights.
  • Set realistic time-frames: Every goal has a target schedule. Ensure you allow for sufficient time to achieve the goal. Don't set yourself impossible schedules that prevent you from achieving your goal, hence suffer a sense of non-achievement and failure.
  • Value yourself: You are unique, you are strong, and you are able. Never undervalue yourself. No matter what anyone may say to you, never consider yourself a 'failure'. You may have setbacks, and you may need to hone your goal setting and achievement skills (after all you are learning to do just that), but do not, under any circumstance, allow anyone to convince you that you are a failure. You are not; you are learning to be a success!

Stay away from negativity. It is much easier to achieve your goals if you are in a positive frame of mind. Avoid people who constantly give you negative feedback, or who are themselves are in a negative frame of mind. Avoid negative news reports and entertainment programs. These can only bog you down and hinder your progress.

Be clear about what you are out to achieve, ensure that your goals are positive goals, keep the above points in mind and start dreaming dreams that come true.
