Self Help Tips (Home) > Self Confidence > Eye contact Body Language and Lack of Eye ContactIn this article, you will learn how to make proper eye contact and learn the importance of eye contact in body language.Do you wonder why your messages are sometimes misunderstood by your listener? It is a common mistake to assume that what you say is what you mean but it's not. It actually depends on how you say it! The way you say something is more powerful than the actual words you say. Do you consider body language, eye contact and pitch changes while talking? How do your gestures communicate for you? Are you aware that your tones of voice and facial expressions tell people more than the words you say? In the course of a normal conversation, your voice's tone, its variations and your facial expressions make up more than 92 percent of your non-verbal message while the actual words are only 8 percent. What should you do to communicate effectively? A college education or a huge technical vocabulary is unnecessary to communicate emphatically and effectively. Your message becomes clearer and more emphatic if you use non-verbal methods that reinforce the importance of what you say. Your non-verbal communication, which is the manner you speak, can both improve and support the words you say or it can do the opposite. Never underestimate the importance of eye contact and how it influences your communication with others. When communicating with others, eyes are an important factor. However, do not stare nor look at somebody or something else especially on one-on-one communication. Staring makes people uncomfortable and gazing off into nowhere does not establish trust on your audience. If you speak in the same manner, then it is important that you learn to communicate with more confidence and refinement by keeping your head up and varying your gaze direction. Keep in mind that eye contact and hand gestures accentuate a point and bring about trust with the other person or group of persons. Practice by looking at the other person's eye for no longer than 10-15 seconds, then look away and look at him again! Use a relaxed and steady gaze and remember to look away occasionally to show respect for the other person. Hope this article helped you to cope with lack of eye contact and making proper eye contact.
