How to Become an Effective Leader

Everyone dreams of being a leader - the one in command. But to be a leader takes a lot more than personal charm and brilliance at what you do. A leader strives to bring out the best in others and leads his team towards the mutual success of the team and each individual member. We offer you some quick tips on how to be a good leader; achieving the goals set by your company and making work itself more meaningful for your team.

A good leader is not one who tramples over others, takes credit for his team's work and looks constantly towards climbing higher in the ladder of success. Conducting yourself well and focusing on the job at hand will automatically demand your promotion and the respect of your team. It is essential that a leader concentrate not just on his work but the people who work for him too.

It cannot be denied that a team, which works well together, has a higher success rate and ability to create superior quality work as opposed to an individual multi-tasking to accomplish the same. Leaders have the responsibility to inspire the team to work together by bringing out the best in each member. It all sounds fancy and righteous but how does one actually accomplish this?

To be an effective team leader you must begin with yourself. Simple tips like dressing smartly and actually listening to your team can get you started with being a worthy leader. We expect our juniors to accomplish certain tasks and maintain a particular decorum in the workplace. But laying down commands and expecting others to practice it is a fool's way of thinking. A leader leads by example. Even a simple task like being punctual can be easily expected from your team if you do the same.

As a leader, you have to create a working environment that is comfortable and encourages your team to put in an extra effort at their job. For kids, learning is best accomplished when we reward and praise them for their good conduct. It is interesting to note that for adults it works just as effectively. Acknowledging your team's effort will motivate them to work better. Creating a sense of pride in your workplace will work towards enhancing the self-image of your team members.

Leadership is a force inside you, which motivates you to improve yourself first. Concentrate on the small tasks as much as the bigger ones and do justice to all of them. As leaders we may consider ourselves an authority on a particular subject and criticism never goes down too well with us. But a leader who accepts constructive criticism with dignity marks himself as a good leader. It is not hard to achieve this if only one realizes that no one is perfect and life is about continuously improving yourself.

Several quick tips can help you take criticism in your stride and in doing so command the respect of others. Looking towards improving yourself and acknowledging to yourself that your team is a valuable asset can make you an effective leader.
