Help! My Child is Constantly Seeking My Attention, Why?

Does your child constantly try to grab your attention? Does your child keep asking you to stop whatever you are doing and check out something he wants you to see? Does he constantly want your attention focused on him?

This kind of behavior can get you irritated, because you have so much to complete and seemingly not enough time. You feel frustrated and angry and unable to match the demands of your child and all that needs to be done.

Relax! Most of the time, the child is so involved in whatever is going on for him at the moment, that all he wants to do is share the wonder of it with you. You know you do it often enough when you ask your spouse to stop and look at something funny you've seen or something astounding that you've read. Its just wanting to share an experience. Your child is too young to grasp that you need to concentrate your attention on whatever it is you are doing at the moment. Explain it to him gently.

More often than not, parents underestimate how important it is for the child to be watched. The child feels acknowledged and loved if he sees you watching him, especially if he's got your unprompted, undivided attention. Children who grow up with adequate attention having been paid to them develop a strong sense of self worth.

The opposite can also happen if you deprive the child of appropriate attention. If he doesn't get enough of it, he could grow up with an unhealthy self image because he reads it as a sign of being not worthy enough of your attention. Don't ever allow that to happen to your child.

A child is full of the joy of living and a completely spontaneous creature. Know when to watch and participate with your child and do learn to curb your need to give too much advice. A child's call for your attention is a request for acknowledgment and approval, not for coaching always. There's a time to instruct and a time to just watch, enjoy and cherish the moment.
