Tips for Better Parenting

No one said parenting was easy. Today more people are realizing that parenting is not just about providing food, clothing, shelter and education. It is a multitude of different tasks that need to be handled; you get no holidays and nearly everything you do will affect the child in one way or the other. There really are no set rules and parenting techniques differ all over the world. But we have put down a collection of articles that may aid you through this journey of parenthood.

Apart from a safe and healthy environment, you have to also work towards developing the intangible aspects like self worth, individuality, security etc. Parenting is challenging but it does not have to be daunting. Keep in mind simple suggestions like communication - always make sure you tell your children that you love them, appreciate them verbally for who they are and most importantly, listen to them. It is easy to nod at your child while you are cooking but you may not respond to him the way he wants you to.

How about dealing with David, Mary or Lisa? Your child's imaginary friends may cause some worry. But it is only a part of growing up and may be due to lack of attention or just a general need to have a constant playmate. This may not be a real cause for concern and it is best that you try not to enforce too strongly that such a person does not exist.

You must realize that being positive in your parenting style does not mean that you don't discipline or punish your children. Usually children perceive punishment as rejection and disapproval. You have to let your child know that you only disapprove of the immediate action but not of him as a person. Rejection and disapproval can cause havoc with a child's emotional well being.

As children seem to grow, it seems scary that they demand more time to themselves. Of course it seems like a gross injustice that they should cast you aside while you have given them so much of your time and love. But parents know that at some point they have to let go of their children. Just because a pre-teen or teen wants his privacy, it does not mean that he doesn't love you anymore.

Respecting children's privacy is important. You may worry about the kind of company they may get into and generally what happens behind closed doors. But the more you pry into your child's life, eavesdropping on conversations or reading journals, the more it will push your child away from you. Your children may behave irresponsibly sometimes but they are not stupid. As long as you have given them a strong foundation and continue to provide a secure and loving atmosphere, they will choose to say 'no' when they need to.

There really are so many issues to deal with when you are a parent. It is a learning experience for you too and there is always room for improvement. Good luck and happy parenting!
